Matte Black Wraps on Vehicles

With the latest foil-wrapping technology you can now have your car color changed temporarily or permanently without repainting the original finish. These Matte Black vinyl wraps are fully removable, and will give your car a complete new look while keeping your original paint intact for years. You can revert to the original finish or apply another wrap at any time. Plus, this high quality film has exactly the same appearance and surface structure as a regular paint finish – even care and cleaning are identical.

If we were to predict trends, this is about the last one that we would have come up with: the rise of flat, or matte, black as a color for hot cars. After all, we all grew up with shiny cars. Shiny says new, fresh, clean. At the moment, the trend to dull finishes is pretty much confined to high-end cars, but it seems like it’s not far from breaking into the mainstream. Among car designers and stylists, matte is becoming the new black. The not-so-shiny satin finish (usually in black) popularized by urban hot-rodders, racers and custom-motorcycle builders is going mainstream and upscale.

Ducati famously swathed its Monster Dark motorcycles in matte black. Lamborghini has been selling cars with matte black, white and even blue finishes. We have seen production cars from Audi, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz and others with matte paint that harks back to the 1949 Mercuries and ‘32 Ford highboy roadsters that personify the 1950s and 1960s when young hot-rodders on tight budgets often saved the paint for last.

Durbin mentions that “matte finishes surprise longtime executives like Ed Welburn, GM’s vice president of design, who has watched the industry spend decades perfecting high-gloss paint only to see the tide turn.” “It’s easy to see why automakers are keen on the trend.” Welburn said, “Nearly all automakers are experimenting with matte because it shows off the pure design of the car. It reduces the design to the very core elements because you’re not influenced by the surroundings at all. You don’t have the reflections of trees or buildings or the reflection of clouds or anything on the car because of the matte finish. You see the pure surface development and nothing else.”

At a time when auto manufacturers are desperate to separate themselves from the competition, matte finish has been a new attribute to design and style, and now that it is front and center, drivers will no doubt recognize that it no longer conveys “work in progress”, but rather differentiation and uniqueness, which is also the center of creating impressions. Also mentioned in Durbin’s article, Aaron Bragman, an auto industry analyst for the consulting company Global Insight, said, “Another reason matte finishes are taking off is that young drivers, who are used to the flat finishes on their cell phones and laptops, no longer equate shininess with luxury.”
